Rhythm of our days…

Oh my… is it really the last week of January already?  I hope winter is going by as fast for all of you actually experiencing a “real” winter.

I realize I haven’t posted in ages.  I guess the whirlwind of the holidays and then recovering from the holidays left little time for blogging; but, we had a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas.

With the new year here and Lincoln getting a bit older (he’ll be 3 in May, what?!?), I’ve been thinking a lot lately about rhythm in our home life. I think I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been quite interested in the Waldorf education philosophy, and creating a predictable rhythm is a big focus.  Simplicity Parenting also definitely touches on it.

I’m not talking about a set schedule per se- certainly anyone with a toddler can attest to the fact that maintaining tight schedules becomes quite difficult.  But, more of a gentle flow that helps a child know what to expect throughout the day (mealtimes, play time, bed time, etc.).

Currently, we have pretty good daily habits, but I’d like to work on creating more seasonal and yearly rhythm too.  This can be accomplished through focusing on seasonal changes and special holiday and festival celebrations.  Obviously, we all know the traditional holidays (Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Christmas, etc.), but delving into Waldorf, I’ve begun to discover all sorts of additional cultural festivals throughout the year- as well as ways to make those season changes (Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, etc.) more special.

I have grand plans to start incorporating these events into our year- we will see how that all pans out 😉 I will keep you posted.
First up is Valentine’s Day, so I am working on a few, small things we can do to make that day special at our home.

For now, I’ll leave you with a few family pictures we took just before the holidays.  The session was a lot of fun.  We were in the arts district in downtown LA and had an amazing photographer (Britney Moore Photography, for anyone local to LA… she was fantastic!)

Happy New Year everyone!

PS- Any tips on special things you do to celebrate throughout the year, please feel free to share 🙂

abandoning the blog?

I have to confess I’ve been having trouble finding time to post lately. Clearly this is evident in the fact that it’s been about two weeks since I last wrote.

In that time, Lincoln has fully recovered from his stomach virus. Of course despite all of the hand washing, continuous laundry and other miscellaneous cleaning, husband and I both caught a bit of the bug. Luckily it was a much milder case for both of us– nothing at all like what Lincoln had.

Anyway, since then, we’ve been able to resume our usual outings to music class and ‘mommy & me’ meet ups. It’s also been extremely warm here, in the 80s everyday, so Lincoln and I have been spending a lot of time at the park.

This is from last weekend when Dad joined us at the park 🙂

We are now off to Bend to visit family there. Our two nephews are playing t-ball this year and we are going down to see one of their games.

This does means another 6+ hour car ride with Lincoln. The good news is since we switched him into a convertible car seat, he seems to do much, much better in the car. He is still (obviously) rear-facing, but the new seat allows him to see out the windows and I think it’s just more comfortable. Hopefully I can distract him with snacks and books… and I am hoping for a nice long nap!

Of course I waited until this morning to frantically pack. While I got things together, Lincoln did this…

(that’s an entire roll of toilet paper that has been unrolled in case you can’t tell)

So, I am not abandoning my blog, but as spring turns to summer and the nice weather continues, posts may become a bit more sporadic.

Have a nice weekend!

on the road!

laundry and nursing…

I started this blog as a way to keep in touch with friends and family that I don’t see often– especially now that we’ve moved away from Chicago.  But secretly, I have dreams of turning it into a much more interesting family/lifestyle blog.  There are so many great blogs out there that do a good job of talking about their children/family, but also covering other topics that are interesting to non-relatives as well.

Some of my favorites are…

A Cup of Jo

Jen Loves Kev

rockstar diaries

… and there are many more.

Someday when Lincoln is slightly older and napping on a more consistent basis, I promise more interesting posts.  Currently, I’m not capable of much more than doing loads and loads of laundry and feeding baby boy 🙂

Truly the most exciting thing to happen recently is my discovery of a nursing bra that I love and is only $16.99 from Target!  Thrilling stuff, right? 😉

apparently I’m not the only one that loves this new bra… it is sold out online

In other news, as I mentioned before, it seems that since Lincoln learned how to roll over, his nighttime sleep has been quite different.  Last night was night number 3 of waking up EVERY hour, literally…8:45pm, 9:45pm, 10:45pm, 11:45pm… you get the idea 🙂  It’s been pretty brutal. I am hoping that this is just a growth spurt or reaction to his new rolling over skills and that it will pass soon, because I am exhausted!

at least one of us is wide awake every day…
