California love…

So, I know I’ve been MIA here on the blog for some time. I have some BIG news that I’ve been dying to share, and I finally can…

Husband just accepted a position in Los Angeles!  We’re moving to California!
Crazy, right?!?

I am beyond excited… but, also slightly overwhelmed.  Searching for a place to rent in a city that I have never even visited is a bit challenging– especially when it’s a city/area as large as Los Angeles.  We are flying to LA this weekend to look at a few places and get a better feel for the different cities/neighborhoods.  Hopefully we’ll have some luck and find a place that we love.

Also, moving equals packing.  Ugh.  Never fun.  Now I have little Lincoln to “help” me out… I’m sure that will go smoothly 😉

But, more than anything, I am so excited to begin this new adventure and move our little family to sunny California.  The ocean, palm trees, farmers markets (year round!), local wine, great shopping, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine… I cannot wait!

Anyone out there with any recommendations on places to check out, places to avoid or any other general southern California advice, please let me know!

In the meantime, in addition to the house hunting and packing, I will be working on getting my wardrobe California ready…  Hopefully I can master a laid back, but put together look like these ladies…

Apparently, I need to bleach my hair and purchase some denim cutoffs ASAP 🙂

Happy March!

A few random musings on this Friday…

* Have you seen this new Threshold brand at Target? I pretty much love everything that they are selling under this brand. Anyway, in my quest to “green” our lives, I ditched our plastic spoons/spatulas/etc. this week and got some very cute “Threshold” kitchen tools made of acacia wood. Next, I am trying to learn more about essential oils. I am going to a little event at a cafe here next week led by a woman who sells products from doTERRA, a line of really high quality essential oils. Anyway, apparently you can use EOs for all sorts of things… cleaning, as homeopathic remedies for various ailments, to help with relaxation and sleep… I am excited.

* I mentioned before that I have eliminated dairy from my diet because of some tummy issues Lincoln was having… Well, I’ve slowly started adding some dairy back in here and there, but one thing I’ve discovered in my dairy-free life is coconut milk ice cream and it’s awesome! I’ve tried several flavors from the Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss brand and they are delicious. Now, this ice cream may be dairy free, but it is by no means healthy… it is still ice cream… but I have to say, I don’t know if I will ever go back to the regular stuff… it’s that good.

my most favorite flavor... yum, yum...

* I waste a lot of time on Instagram on my phone, sharing pictures of Lincoln and what not, and I have begun to stumble upon all sorts of bloggers, artists and designers who share their work there. One brand that I think is just adorable is called Hello Apparel. They have cute stuff for kids and for adults…

* And some exciting news for me… husband shaved his beard! It must be the ridiculous winning streak that the Blackhawks are on that cheered him up and pushed him to do it.

no more beard face!

farewell beard face!

Hope you have a great weekend! Here’s hoping some spring-like weather will be on the way shortly…

a few things…

This week really flew by!   Here’s a bit about what went we’ve been up to…

* Lincoln is 9 months old!?! Crazy.  I still have to take pictures and do his “official” monthly post, but his well-baby visit went great.  He is healthy, growing and right on track developmentally.

* Also, my cousin’s adorable baby boy just turned one, so here’s a birthday shout out to Asher!  Hope you have a wonderful birthday weekend 🙂

Happy Birthday from Lincoln :)

Happy Birthday from Lincoln!  Disclaimer– We may have taken this picture to wish Nani a happy birthday several months ago… but I know Lincoln sends his birthday wishes to his cousin too 🙂

* I started reading a new book that I am obsessed with.  It’s called, “Beyond the Sling” and it’s by Mayim Bialik.  That’s right.  It is a book by Blossom.  Anyway, it’s all about how she is raising her two boys.  Now, of course, I am really enjoying it because most of my parenting choices echo the things she is discussing…  I suppose if someone is doing things in a completely different way then they might hate the book.  But, if you are at all curious about natural childbirth, co-sleeping, gentle discipline, etc. I think this is a great book that introduces the concepts in a non-judgey way, from the perspective of a real Mom.  (Also, did you know that Blossom has a PhD?  in neuroscience? Also, I’m sure she loves being referred to as “Blossom”…)

*I just discovered a new website that I am very excited about called Brickyard Buffalo.  It’s another “deals” website like Totsy or Zuilily or Gilt, but all of the vendors they feature are small, independent artists/companies.  Does Lincoln need these adorable bicycle leggings?  For 20% off, probably…

I love them. There are more cute prints at the vendor's website, Sugarlime Lane.

* I’m still working on my “declutter, clean, simplify” mantra, and I am making some progress in Lincoln’s closet that I hope to share soon.  Along with my decluttering, I am trying to make some changes around the house to be more “natural” and “green.”  I know it’s the trendy thing to do nowadays, but truly it’s having a baby that has made me reconsider and want to change.  Pre-Lincoln I was already using household cleaners from Method and Seventh Generation and trying to eat organic as much as possible; I’m just trying to continue those things and make some more adjustments.  One thing I’ve been thinking about lately is all of the plastic in our lives nowadays.  I’d like to start using more glass, cloth and/or wood when possible.  I’m starting small by replacing our plastic Tupperware with glass food storage containers. I am also planning on looking for more wooden/cloth toys for Lincoln going forward (not that he needs anymore toys right now– we have gotten so many amazing gifts and hand-me-downs!).

Did your week fly by too?  I hope so 🙂  Also, if you have any tips on living more environmentally friendly, please feel free to share!

in a rut

Maybe it’s because January always feels like the longest month ever… Maybe it’s because it has been cloudy everyday for what feels like the last 500 days… Maybe it’s because I am just getting over a very unpleasant head cold… Maybe it’s because I am still sans any real friends out here…

Whatever it is, I have been feeling a bit blah lately…

But, I am forcing myself to get out of this funk… I did some searching and found two new mommy groups here in Spokane.  I’m feeling optimistic about the potential for finally making some mom friends.  I went to a ‘meet up’ today at some local kids’ gymnastics center and Lincoln had a fantastic time crawling all over the colorful, bouncy floor.

Also, I have to get outside and get some fresh air everyday, even if it is cloudy and grey and cold.  I know it’s good for Lincoln and (I’m sure) good for me.  I am committing to daily walks with baby boy… even if we are only outside for 10 minutes, I’m sure it’s better than nothing.

Two exciting developments in Lincoln world…
His two front teeth are almost in!  One of them is completely through the gums, and the other one finally started to pop through this morning.  Poor thing.  I cannot imagine how painful teething must be.

And, Lincoln started saying, “Mama” today!  Now, I’m not certain that he was actually directing it at me, but I was still pretty excited to hear him babble, “Ma, ma, ma, ma…” all day long.

Here’s to a happier week!

laundry and nursing…

I started this blog as a way to keep in touch with friends and family that I don’t see often– especially now that we’ve moved away from Chicago.  But secretly, I have dreams of turning it into a much more interesting family/lifestyle blog.  There are so many great blogs out there that do a good job of talking about their children/family, but also covering other topics that are interesting to non-relatives as well.

Some of my favorites are…

A Cup of Jo

Jen Loves Kev

ohdeardrea

rockstar diaries

… and there are many more.

Someday when Lincoln is slightly older and napping on a more consistent basis, I promise more interesting posts.  Currently, I’m not capable of much more than doing loads and loads of laundry and feeding baby boy 🙂

Truly the most exciting thing to happen recently is my discovery of a nursing bra that I love and is only $16.99 from Target!  Thrilling stuff, right? 😉

apparently I’m not the only one that loves this new bra… it is sold out online

In other news, as I mentioned before, it seems that since Lincoln learned how to roll over, his nighttime sleep has been quite different.  Last night was night number 3 of waking up EVERY hour, literally…8:45pm, 9:45pm, 10:45pm, 11:45pm… you get the idea 🙂  It’s been pretty brutal. I am hoping that this is just a growth spurt or reaction to his new rolling over skills and that it will pass soon, because I am exhausted!

at least one of us is wide awake every day…

life after baby…

With just a few short weeks left in this pregnancy, I am just dying to meet this little one that I can feel kicking me all day long.  We’ve watched a lot of birthing videos in my HypnoBirthing class and I am almost in tears during each one.  I am just so looking forward to my little baby’s birthing day– this is what we have to call it in class… we are always reminded, babies are not born on their due date, they are born on their birthday 🙂

However, I have to admit that I am selfishly looking forward to a few other things that are just about me… like… sleeping on my stomach!  eating sushi!  And especially, having a wardrobe that doesn’t revolve around the same few maternity pieces that I feel like I’ve been wearing for months.

I don’t have any unrealistic expectations… I know that I will leave the hospital still looking at least 6 months pregnant, but that actually sounds really good right now…

Anyway, I’ve been searching for some non-maternity pieces that I can wear post-baby while I get back into shape.  Of course, I turned first to my fave store and former employer, Anthropologie.

These two tops are currently on their way to my closet…

Petal Window Tee... really cute cutout detail in back... may need to purchase in additional colors

I’m hoping these drapey tops will work with the various pairs of yoga pants that I’m sure I will be living in once baby arrives.  I know they are so plain, but just the thought of having something new feels really exciting.  I’ve also discovered a handful of cute clothing boutiques here in Spokane and I can’t wait to be able to shop them.

In completely unrelated news, I saw this video on Facebook, and just think it’s hilarious.  If you are a Cubs fan or a Sox fan or a Ron Swanson fan (if you do not know who Ron Swanson, please do some research asap– one of the funniest characters on TV right now), I think you will appreciate this…  Have a good weekend!
